Special Centralities from President Betz
Re: Interim Policy on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Drones)
This will serve as the University of Central Oklahoma's interim policy on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, frequently referred to as drones. The use of such devices carries with it significant safety and privacy concerns. The Federal Aviation Administration has the ultimate authority to regulate drones as well as commercial and hobbyist aircraft. However, they have not addressed within their regulations the specific challenges and remedies related to drones. Because of the potential dangers, and lack of certainty, the use of such devices on or above university property, for now, is prohibited.
I have asked the executive director of Safety and Transportation Services and Legal Counsel to form a committee representing faculty, staff and students to study best practices and future FAA regulations and propose a permanent policy for consideration by the cabinet.
The UCO chief of police is authorized to grant permission for the use of drones in cases of health or safety emergencies.
This interim policy is effective immediately and shall remain in effect until further notice.
